I have been following hip2save since Collin was doing taste tests with her husband of real vs. generic foods. Back then I felt excited to save money with someone who was also excited to save money. Collin has obviously done well and I am happy for her. Her hard work has blessed the lives of so many. However this post seems to broadcast that Collin is living a lifestyle way above many of her followers. Someone that can drop $500 on houseplants is not living paycheck to paycheck, is not worrying about bills and how to put food in the table. Someone who can spend $500 on houseplants is probably not all that excited about saving 50 cents on toothpaste. I figured Collin probably sold out a while ago. I didn’t expect to see that fact flaunted on the website. The post was in poor taste and a slap in the face to many of her followers.
It’s sad that instead of being happy for Colleen and her success you take it as a slap in the face. I don’t know if you know her backstory, if not you should read it. She started this blog with crippling debt and a lot of painful stuff going on in her life. She has rebuilt her life piece by piece and has made huge sacrifices to get where she is. I don’t find it threatening to where I’m at in my life, I find it inspiring! Let’s build and lift each other up and be happy for each other successes!💕

Hey Katie, thanks for your post! I would like to emphasize that “Collin has obviously done well and I am happy for her.” I am not threatened by her success in the least. I am a lawyer and my husband is a doctor. We could live a lavish lifestyle but we don’t. We choose to be frugal. We choose not to drive flashy cars or live in a huge house. We feel that talking about big purchases in front of other family members that don’t have as much is in poor taste. I think it is important to remind Collin that some people following her website are not in the same circumstances that she may find herself in. Others (like myself) may come here because they choose a frugal lifestyle. I find it disingenuous to post about keeping Christmas group gifts under a dollar and then have a post showing that Collin actually spends much more than that on her gifts. It is “jarring” as one other reader put it. I am not trying to bring someone down, I am just trying to express an opinion. I would give my daughter the same advice.

Amanda, I couldn’t agree with you more. I for one have learned to shop frugally, thanks to Collin and the Hip2Save Team, at Pottery Barn. I don’t always want the cheapest thing as I want the quality too, but I want the best bang for my buck. These plants align with that as well. These plants don’t come in and scream for a new pot (and hey – has anyone checked out THOSE PRICES?!?!?!?!?) and leave me wondering which of the 9,387 soils that Lowe’s sells that I should purchase to use and if I need anything else in my pot or if the Lowe’s guy really know or should I should just go to the nursery and…. well, you get the point…
The posts are for people like me because guess who is going to say, “oops! You need to be given water to drink too? I forgot this week!” Yep, ME!!!!!!!!!! Also, I don’t know types of plants nor do I know their needs (how much light, again, for this one?) Sooooo, what does one do when they don’t know? Ask around / research, right? Well, research takes time and time is money too! Look at the savings just adding up already, for me anyway.
This site isn’t for freebies (as I’ve seen many posts about), it isn’t always about getting the cheapest item (I’d rather skip some of those with the less than stellar reviews and pay more for a quality option), nor is it all about couponing (but coupons are wonderful and also sometimes the biggest pain in my husbands rear end); this site is all encompassing. It is about being cost efficient while purchasing things in ANY price range for people at various stages of their lives, as we are all at different stages of our lives, and Collin is tryin to appeal to all walks of life at different stages of lives. So, if something posted isn’t in your price range OR you aren’t interested in said item, you simply move along and go to the next thing or wait to be notified about the next post (you are signed up for and getting notifications, right?)
But, where people have crossed the line is being rude, condescending, or by saying that a FREE!!!!!! website to help others save not only money but also time (as time is money, folks) made anyone feel a certain type of re way. For every person that hated it there is 2 more that liked it. I, for one, LOVED IT and have been spending hours researching this very thing with my husband since we just moved into our new and final home.
The bottom line is – If you don’t like something don’t look at it, don’t use it, and keep it moving, but no one should try to take others down or make others feel small for loving and sharing anything, regardless of the price range.
I completely agree with packerm. The $500 plant purchase was a total shocker for me. It’s not what I come here for. In fact, someone can put together pots and plants for way less.
@Pack … you’re incorrect and your envy is showing. I was broke and walked away pennyless from an abusive marriage 8 years ago. I started following this blog, worked hard, saved and I’m now in the Millionaire Next Door Club, as I’m guessing Collin is. I don’t say it to nragm but point out frugality is a mindset and way of life. Many people on this blog and around the country/world can afford some luxuries on things they value (like plants that can last YEARS) and still get excited about saving .50 on toothpaste. I DO! And, I still shop at thrift store for clothes, use S&S each month for the best deals, and price compare weekly grocery ads. Please try to understand that someone rising up in their financial situation does not push you down. Contrary to what some want you to believe, the economy is not a Zero Sum Game Best of luck!
Out of all the complaining here, this post makes me the saddest. I’ve been following Collin for nearly 10 years. When I started, I was struggling to make ends meet. Now, I’m happy to say that I could spend the money on this pricey plant (though I never would – but I do splurge on other things), but I still absolutely get excited about saving 50 cents. I’m in a better place than I was 10 years ago because I really adopted a better mindset about money – both saving more and earning more. Collin has done well for herself, and that’s what she wants for her readers as well. If you’re not any better off than you were when this blog started, maybe dig a bit deeper, but don’t resent Collin for it.

I have to agree with you. I started to become concerned months ago when I would see similar ‘sponsored’ style posting as I had seen on some influencers I followed on Instagram. Same products, same links, same inconsistent brands from what I would have expected this site to post about.

While I can get on board with ordering plants, I am a bit shocked at their price tags. I bought a pothos locally for $15 that was a large flowing basket, and I bought starters with 6-12 leaves/vines each for only $3 per starter.
I bought two money plants for $5 and $6 respectively. My rattlesnake was on sale for $6 at Lowe’s from Costa Farms. etc. etc. I don’t have my own zanzibar, but they’re $6-$18 depending on size. I’m in WV.
I just can’t understand the high price tag. I’m not mad at the post for sharing something expensive, I’m just shocked at the companies prices for the same plants.
I loooove this post!💗 I love indoor plants and have failed miserably over the years keeping them alive! I would love to order from a small business like this who has taken all the guess work out of it. Definitely worth it to me to spend a little more on one plant I love, then spend a bunch of smaller amounts on plants that I don’t know how to pot or keep alive, ha ha! Collin, I sure appreciate all your years of hard work and all I’ve learned from you! Even if I wasn’t interested in buying a plant I would still enjoy reading this post because it helps me get to know you even better as a person and there’s value in that☺️

I had such a lovely time with this post. It brought me back to my childhood when mom would order every seed book and nursery book available. She would pore over them and learn the newest varieties and plan out what she could afford to buy—very little. I would look through with her and it was a sweet time looking back I know she would have had a great time looking at the offerings. So what’s wrong with just looking whether you can afford it or not? If you are looking for inexpensive and quality plants check with your local flower and gardening clubs. Many have sales where the sell cuttings and plants as fund raisers.

Wow!!!!!!!!! Some people on this post are so ridiculous. “Saving” has a broader meaning than just money. If this post does not suit you, then scroll right on by, but some find it helpful and a “savings” for them. The world doesn’t revolve around only what “you” want to see posted and find helpful. Thx Hip2Save and I hope, despite all the ridiculous posts, you’ll continue to post these kind of “deals”. I’m not a plant person and probably would never spend that much on a plant, although I can, I found this post very cute, fun and thoughtful.

Wow. The world is a magical place full of people waiting to be offended by something.
While I would never spend anywhere near this much on a potted plant (I grow quite a few plants so I already have the soil, containers, “know how,” etc…), I wouldn’t criticize/judge anyone who would or could. These items at this price point don’t align with my frugal lifestyle. But that’s me. I also like frequenting my local nursery (as opposed to a “big box” store, though I know that’s the only option for some) because they have a great selection and really helpful staff, even if it is more pricey than a chain store. But should people judge that I spend more at a local nursery? Unless they’re paying for it… no.
Also, sometimes nurseries don’t carry everything I want. In my area, it’s impossible to find pilea peperomioides around me so I ordered those, along with several other types of plants I can’t get locally, from etsy. They all came packaged beautifully and in great condition. I recommend reading seller reviews. And about the pilea – they are AWESOME because they propagate themselves (which is why they’re sometimes referred to as “the giving plant”) so my ~$20 buy on etsy means I have been able to give so many as gifts, as well as growing new ones for myself. So I totally recommend that plant, and I personally don’t find it hard to care for.
Posting about a site that she loves and with which she has had great experiences is Colin’s prerogative. Some people appreciated it. If you didn’t like it, remember the words of a wise rabbit: if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
For clarity, I realize that these plants as advertised are not coming from a big box store, and I commend anyone who tries to support a smaller business when/if they can.
So I didn’t realize a plant post would do this. It’s one of those posts where I read some of the comments and then wanted to go hide in a corner. 😬 Truthfully, I almost deleted the post yesterday… but I decided to keep it up and focus on the positive comments and the reason I wrote the post in the first place.
This post was written out of my honest love for this company. I think it’s so neat to get beautiful plants shipped to my door that are ready to go right out of the box (and that are still thriving even though I have no green thumb). I was also really impressed with their customer service, and fascinated by how they ship them to arrive in such pristine condition. Yes, this company is expensive, and I get this post isn’t for everyone, but I also love to share some of my favorite splurges on the site. Plus, I think these plants make such great gifts, and when you compare the cost to flower delivery, it’s not so bad.
When I started this blog back in 2008, I would NOT have purchased plants online from this site. My splurges back then were buying nail polish for cheap (with a coupon/sale) and painting my nails at home, and going on shopping sprees at the thrift stores – I still do this (love me some thrift store finds!).
Back in 2008/2009, I was focused on paying down my debt and re-gaining control of my finances. Fast forward to now and I have wiggle room in my budget… so my splurges are different. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t like to save on toothpaste, or still get super excited about birthday freebies, and stacking sales with coupons. If you know me personally, you know that my frugality is something that I’m proud of. I love sharing deals with others, and I love even more when someone comments with how they benefited from a deal on the site. ❤️
We love you Collin and we appreciate your honesty and kindness and creativity and everything you’ve built your company into. Thank you for sharing this post and not deleting it. As a plant lover and a shopper, I like hearing about other businesses that aren’t giant chain stores.

Matter of fact, I think you should look at this as an opportunity! Why not have a category for these types of posts? That way, we don’t miss out on items that aren’t necessarily a deal. You could call it Hipsters Favorites or something. I have been following Hip2Save since 2009 when I lost my job. You were a lifesaver, as it was a very difficult time for me. All this does is show who the REAL people are, whilst also pointing out those whom are not truly supporters amongst us. Those real supporters are uplifting in nature, wanting others to succeed as well, even if not in agreement. This entitlement, rudeness, bossiness, and other behaviors that many other individuals have displayed within this comment thread alone on reflects back upon themselves and themselves only. Collin, I think you should not take the negative comments so personally. I disagree with a lot of replies that negative comments are driven by envy. Everyone has a right to an opinion. Obviously it did stir a lot of discussion. But in whatever you do you need both negative and positive feedback. How else would you grow? Kudos for keeping the post where it is. I love this community and the team behind it. I felt so alone as a stay at home mom for three years, isolated and a bit cut off from the independence I had previously known. This community helped me regain a purpose. Now, after being back at work for several years, I’m able to pick splurges while still reveling in the joy of savings. Collin, I have been with you since the beginning ( I just realized that!) and you have helped me immeasurably to save money and be able to give to others by sharing your deals. One person commented that long-time readers would be offended by your post about the plants. I’m not and I know many others aren’t. I AM HAPPY to see your site doing so well–sponsored posts and all– because I know how to determine if a deal works for me or not. Frankly, I found H2S through another savings site that I seldom check now because I’m obsessed with checking yours. (I might need help, lol!) There are always posts that don’t apply to me but instead of complaining, I simply scroll past.
Some of the comments have astounded me. I honestly don’t understand why people are upset. Just because it’s a savings site primarily doesn’t mean that all posts have to concentrate on saving money. Life can be hard. And we all need something that we can aspire to so I love hearing about splurge items. I was wondering if anyone knew of any other couponing sites that were similar to the way Hip2Save was before? I love Hip2Save but I miss seeing ways of using coupons to get free items.
This is pretty rude of you. If you see something you don’t like on a website that isn’t yours you shouldn’t respond in such a condescending fashion. Instead, if something is not applicable to you try not responding next time. It’ll not only be WAY more becoming to you, but will make you seem more appreciative of the work that Collin and her team does when she does report freebies.

I have been a hip2save follower for years and can’t began to tell you how much time and money you have saved me and how that all helped so much to have a stock pile when we were out of work when my husband was in a serious accident. The title of this post made me stop and read it. LOL! And no, I won’t be buying these plants because that’s just not me. The reason I am writing is that I am blown away at the negative comments! Do we just love taking the time to be negative? No one made us read the post and no one made us buy a plant. Just move on. I am blown away more by how many people commented negative that has probably benefited from many other posts and never left a positive comment or thank you. It’s a shame that we have more time and energy to be negative these days. Thank you Hip2save for all of your posts!!! Love you guys!

Collin, are you in your renovated house now? These pictures don’t look like the small guest house you were living in. Hopefully we will get to see some videos of the work that’s been done. I enjoyed the prior video you did.
Hi there! Thanks so much! Believe it or not, we are still not in our new home. Since there have been so many issues and it has taken much longer than expected, we are currently living in a temporary house. BUT I will for sure plan to do a home tour once we are all moved in.
I almost never post comments but this one just just blew my mind. Just when I think I cannot be more disheartened but peoples negativity I read something like these negative comments…and they are about a plant post?! Yikes. I just can’t understand people….if you don’t like something just move on. I could not love this site more. I look forward to checking it every day! I have bounced around trying other deal sites but they don’t compare. I just love this site because you all are always posting neat things, not just cheap deals. I love free toothpaste as much as the next girl, but I also appreciate quality items and personally choose to spend money on things I love….which I can do because I save on others. Please keep doing things the way you are, I appreciate everything you all do more than I can express.
