The struggle is totally real when it comes to fitted sheets! With these clever hacks, making your bed (and sleeping in it) will be hassle-free.

1. Buy patterned sheets.

My hip sidekick Jamie swears by buying striped sheets! Having a pattern (and knowing it runs a particular direction) will help you know just how to place your fitted sheet without the hassle of trial and error.

2. Find the tag on your fitted sheet.

According to a user on Reddit, the tag that’s sewn to the corner of your fitted sheet is always supposed to go on the bottom right corner of your bed. What a genius tip!

While there may be some company out there that doesn’t abide by these rules, I’ve found my sheets typically have a convenient tag reading”top/bottom” or “side” as a helpful guide.

3. Put the top corners on first.

The corners that sit against your headboard are the hardest to stretch a fitted sheet over, especially if your sheet is really tight. Put the top corners on first, so it’s easier to stretch the bottom corners on. Then, make sure the pocket sits deep enough on your mattress.

4. Keep your sheet from slipping off of your bed.

I really love how Cynthia shares how to fix your fitted sheet by adding some 2″ pajama elastics to the corners. If you have a sewing machine, this is a quick and inexpensive fix that’ll keep your fitted sheet from slipping from the bed constantly.

5. Learn how to fold a fitted sheet.

Learn how to fold a fitted sheet the right way, and save yourself from a balled up mess! Laura’s demonstration will help make your life a little easier. Plus, she shares three methods, so there’s a perfect option for everyone.

Bonus hack: Take your fitted sheet to the beach.

Going to the beach this summer? This fitted sheet hack that Deidre shared on her blog is totally genius! Keep your snacks, babies, and towels sand-free by placing heavy items in each corner and creating a space to relax by the ocean.

I always learned to put on 2 opposite corners first, then the other 2. Seems to work for me!

Great tip! I’ll have to try that next time!

Same here…..put the corners on diagonally. You’re able to pull the corners down under the mattress, easily. ALSO: Don’t drag the corners down onto the mattress….that’s how they weaken and tear. Pinch the top of the sheet corner and the mattress corner, together, THEN guide the rest of the corner seam down until you tuck the end of it under the mattress.

For fitted sheets I always buy ones that are 17 inches in the corners so I never have a problem. Most fitted sheet corners measure 15 inches which sometimes is too small. Get the bigger ones.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks so much for the helpful comment, Sue! Good to know!

  3. Go Zags

Yes, sometimes putting on the fitted sheet is hard. I tried to remember to look for tag and from there I usually get the corners in the right spot. What I’m having trouble with is the top sheet. It doesn’t seem to matter what brand of sheets I get I don’t have enough sheet to tuck into both sides of the bed. Drives me nuts.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Putting sheets on the bed sure can be a challenge! Thanks for taking a moment to comment!

    • JODI P

Why do you tuck in the sides of the top flat sheets? You just pull them out to go to bed, anyway. Just leave them loose.

      • Go Zags

I’m guessing but part of the reason why is that is the way my Mom did it. Wish she was still alive so she could see I was actually listening. 🙂 I’m just tucking in the sheets near the bottom of the bed so I don’t need to pull them out to get into bed.

        • Go Zags

I thought of another reason why I tuck the sides of the top sheets in. I worked a couple of years as a hotel maid. We made hospital corners when tucking in the top sheet.

Store your sheets in the matching pillow case so you’re not searching for the set

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Oh yes! Such a great way to keep them together until you need them! Thanks for sharing with us, Kara!

    • Go Zags

I don’t know why I started doing that a couple months ago but is an easy way to keep the sheets together.

    • Shirley

That’s what I have been doing too. So much easier when I tell the kids to change their sheets and they just grab the whole set from the closet.

  5. Ana

I was hoping someone was going to say how to get those super snug sheets on😁 I’ve gotta wait for it husband to get home.

  6. Fran

I always buy the next bigger size sheets! Easy on. Lol

    • Liza (Hip Sidekick)

      Such a good idea Fran!

  7. Judi

Now please please do a post on how to find the top of a blanket! It seems like many blankets, especially the open-weave cotton kind, seem to be square rather than rectangular. Is it just me?

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

OK LOL! I’ll pass this along to the team, Judi!
