Do you hate cluttered kitchen counters?

I have an incredibly simple solution for that old, bulky knife block taking up valuable retail space! And the best part? It will take you less than a minute to do! A budget-friendly solution that’s quick and easy? Now, that’s a win-win-win!

When we were building our current house, I really wanted to be able to move in and clean up our counter space. I felt like our old kitchen had so much clutter between the Keurig, bulky knife block (which I hated), the double toaster, my Alexa, and other random things that found their way onto the counter.

While browsing through Walmart one day, I happened to see this unique-shaped bamboo thing in the kitchen aisle. And come to find out, it was my ticket to a more organized kitchen!

measuring the width of the drawer

Like many things we buy at Walmart or Target, I never planned to go home with this amazing invention 😏 But then again… I’m not the best at avoiding the money spending black hole, sooo I had to guess on how many organizers would fit our new drawers. Lucky for me, I guessed right (which never happens, friends)!

Hip Tip: Before you go shopping, make sure to measure your drawers and count how many knives you will need to accommodate, so you’re better prepared than me!

Next, just place the knife block inside your drawer! It’s really that simple! There’s no cutting, no assembly, nothing! You just take it out of the packaging and you’re ready to add your knives!

I found that the bottom slots are perfect for placing medium to large knives and cheese knives since they tend to have a taller profile. The slots near the top are great for all your steak knives and paring knives.

Look at how beautiful and minimal the completed drawer looks! 😍 We’ve had ours for over three years, and they still look brand new. They’re scratch-free and just as beautiful as the day I bought them!

I even love that I can have my knives right next to my cooking range while I’m making meals. 🙌 Plus, I don’t feel like I had to sacrifice on the functionality or the ease of accessing a knife when I need it.

Voila!

And there you have it, folks! A cleaner, clutter-free countertop in under a minute! Now if only I could find a tile backsplash that would be that easy… 😏

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

You’re very welcome! Thanks a bunch for the kind words! Happy you are loving this idea!

  2. Jaimee

I love this idea, but unfortunately I don’t have an extra drawer 🙁

    • Sara

Oh no, Jaimee! Maybe you can make room for these when you do some spring cleaning in the kitchen?

      • MEi

Do you have this? I really like the idea, no valuable drawer space sucked up, easy access, and out-of-reach for the younguns. Many reviewers say the magnets are not well-made, but I have several knife “strips” from before I remodeled my kitchen that I could use. Are the hinges and box set-up worthy of this money? (I believe I could get my Amish cabinet maker to make this for me if it is not).

  3. Beck

Love this idea! Need to move some things around to have an extra drawer because I’d love to have the counter space!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Yay! Thanks for the feedback, Beck!

I saw these at the thrift store and thought I did not know what they were. Now I need them!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

I know, right!? These are SO neat! I need one too!

Yet another fantastic Walmart find–I too have been bemoaning my bulky knife storage–can’t wait to change it out. Thanks so much!!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Yay! You’re so welcome!

The really funny thing is that we already have one of these in our drawer. But we were given a very nice set of knives in a block years ago. And so the block sits on our counter taking up space, while the old knives that are rarely if ever used are in the drawer in the knife organizer. On my agenda today: clearing out the unneeded knives and putting all the good knives in the drawer organizer. Thanks hip2behome!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

That’s great, Melissa! You’re very welcome!

Such a great idea! Do they sell this in store at Walmart? The link in the post is to a third party seller’s item. Usually they’re more expensive than buying directly from WalMart.

    • riss

Thanks for the link 😀. I’m getting this one.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for the suggestion, Kara! We have updated the link above!

I didn’t know this knife organizer exists! And here i am planning to buy a knife block. All my knives are in the drawer, touching each other 😳😬. I know, i know…But when the kids were small, I kept the knives in a tray and stored them in the upper cabinet so they cannot reach it.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

We did the same thing, Riss! Thanks for sharing with us!

  9. Kellie

I switched to one of these years ago and thought they were brilliant. Then my tiny tots showed me the great new toy he found in the drawer he could newly reach into (around the child lock 😑). I regretted throwing out the block then! So if you have littles, something to think about!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Oh no! Thanks so much for the helpful warning Kellie!

  10. momdkk

I have been using these for a while now and love them. My SIL loved it and just ordered one for her too.

    • momdkk

I have a “half” drawer, which was just right for one of the 8 slot block. But my local Walmart no longer carry them any more, so ordered it from amazon.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Yay! Happy to hear how much you have been loving yours! Thanks a bunch for taking the time to comment! We sure appreciate the feedback!

      • Candy M

i love your kitchen! where did you get cabinets from?? thank you

        • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi there! Thanks for the sweet comment! Those are Sara’s cabinets! They are Timberland shaker cabinets.

          Hope that helps!

Make sure if you are remodeling or building a kitchen to have drawers installed that are tall enough for one of these. I ordered these organizers and couldn’t fit into the kitchen drawer. I measured but apparently the drawers were not tall enough to fit the organizer and the knives.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Oh darn! Thanks a TON for the helpful warning!

  12. Lee Ann Ferguson

I LOVE my knife holder like this!!! Deal of the century tho, found it at goodwill!!! For I swear $3. I only use one and have silverware tray on other side of drawer. I’ve never liked the blocks, and really who uses all those knives. So I got rid of them all and bought only what I use from RADA cutlery. Made in USA and great knives! Check them out if you’ve not heard of them

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

How cool! Such a great score for sure! Thanks for sharing with us! SO glad you are loving yours!
